Historic development

Arts and Crafts house designed in 1899 by Robert Weir Schultz for his friend, C R Seymour. Original garden design shows Schultz’s influence, use of topiary, hedges dividing the area into ‘garden rooms’ immediately around the house; to the south a formal wooded area is noted with radiating paths, and a maze. A lodge was built on the south east of the house at the end of the tree lined approach drive from West Green Road; later maps refer to it as Jasmine Cottage.
The estate of 700 acres appears to have survived intact until 1995 when the owner, Mrs Myburgh, died. The following year the house, 2 cottages, and 16.5 acres of land were for sale. In 1998 the garden was not in a good state. The recent O.S. map shows the formal wood to the south of the house, has one straight path dissecting it, the maze is not marked; reservoirs are noted beyond this area; the boundaries on the land to the west and north of the house have disappeared.
This property with the Croft and Weir’s Barn have a ‘group’ significance, as houses, and probably gardens, designed by Schultz, who was a well known Arts and Crafts designer at the beginning of the C20.
